Gosport Borough Football Club

Gosport Borough Football Club

Personal statement by Mark Adams, former CEO

Yesterday I sadly submitted my resignation as Chief Executive of Gosport Borough Football Club, just under 9 weeks since agreeing to take on the position. Obviously I am disappointed by the series of events that led me to resign.

When Iain Sellstrom took over as Chairman and I agreed to become Chief Executive, we both knew there was a huge mountain to climb to save a club that had been seriously mismanaged for the previous two or three years. We agreed a plan to try to turn the club around and, had we not been appointed, it is obvious to many that Gosport Borough FC would not have even started the current season in the Evo-Stik Southern Premier League.

I am proud of what we achieved in a short period of time. For my part, I had completed a full report on all the club’s creditors, which total well over £200,000, and the start of a plan to repay them; I had produced the first ever cash flow forecast; and have written a budget, showing a surplus, to allow the club to begin to repay its debts, which was agreed by the club’s Board last week. With other changes that have been made at the club, I had hoped that we were beginning to see real progress.

However it is clear that I do not have the unanimous support of the Board for the changes that I see as essential. That made an already difficult job impossible. I originally offered to take on this unpaid role for 2 days a week and have found myself spending more like 4 days. I have a busy professional life in London, I have just moved into a new home in Port Solent, and on Monday I am launching a new business in Hampshire, Solent Business Services. Now is not the time in my life to spend fighting an unnecessary battle.

I should add that the Chairman, Iain Sellstrom, has acted with integrity throughout but has himself found it difficult to make the necessary changes. Given the serious reservations I have about the governance of the football club and many of its financial dealings, I will be offering my cooperation to any investigation by Gosport Borough Council and the Football Association, or other relevant authorities. I am writing to both Gosport Borough Council and the Football Association today.

Certain matters are now subject to legal proceedings between me and the club, and therefore I will be making no further statement on this matter.
